bookr class FAQ

1. General Information

BOOKR Class is an English as a Second Language, English as a Foreign Language (ESL / EFL) edutainment tool designed to engage children to read in the target language. The solution offers a 2-in-1 platform: a safe, ad-free, easy-to-use gamified Library application for students, coupled with a Teacher’s Dashboard displaying real-time statistics.

(1) The Library app is available for smartphones, tablets and desktops. It offers 1000+ digital e-books, 4000+ games and 200+ flashcards in English for children, from beginner to intermediate level. Every storybook provides a complex and engaging learning experience thanks to curated texts, illustrations, animations, interactions, sound effects, authentic narration, text-highlighting and educational games. To help you find the appropriate reading level for students, BOOKR Class uses built-in Lexile placement tests.

(2) The Teacher’s Dashboard allows teachers to recommend books to students, assign homework and examine and export data regarding student performance. Teachers can also browse the book selection based on level, recommended age group, grammar or vocabulary content, and find supporting materials such as activity tips, book previews etc. Teachers can also create and assign comprehension quizzes to their students and generate printable vocabulary tests based on the selected books.

BOOKR Class is recommended for teachers and educators enthusiastic about digital solutions in education, and for their K-8 students between the ages of 4-14 with language proficiency levels from beginner (pre-A1*) to upper-intermediate (B2*).

From kindergarteners to teenagers, everyone can find a story to suit their level and interest.

*According to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The BOOKR Class Library is recommended for K-8 students (between the ages of 4-14) and is divided into nine proficiency levels, adapted to specific language proficiency levels, needs, interests and preferences of language learners. The books are all categorized and each book has a recommended age range (0-8, 6-10, 8-12, 10-14, 12-16) to guide our users. When selecting and composing the texts, different topics and genres are included to showcase the diversity of the English language.

From kindergarteners to teenagers, everyone can find a story to suit their level and interest.

The BOOKR Class Library is divided into 9 proficiency levels which are adapted to the linguistic proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): from pre-A1 to B2 (pre-beginner to upper-intermediate), from BR30L to 1120L.

Upon first opening, BOOKR Class app offers students to fill out a Lexile-based placement test. If completed, the result will place the student to one of the 9 BOOKR levels. However, the placement test can be accessed in the Test Center and completed later as well any number of times. As a teacher you can also find the student’s exact measure in the Teacher’s Dashboard, and assign them a new test, optionally with a deadline.

A Lexile learner measure is a numeric representation of a learner’s ability to read English. Quite simply, a Lexile Measure is an assessment that provides a way to measure a student’s English reading ability or the difficulty of a text. It is a useful tool for educators, administrators, and parents. Measures fall on an intuitive scale, with beginners or easy texts at the bottom and moving up as students and texts advance.

The Lexile scale is a developmental scale ranging from beginning learner measures below 0L (at most BR 400L) to above 1600L for advanced abilities. The higher the learner’s Lexile measure, the greater their ability to read English. More than 35 million learners from 180 countries around the world have received a Lexile measure.

Based on the student’s Lexile score the application will recommend books that are in the student’s Lexile range.

When a student measure and a book measure are the same, the match is estimated to be ideal for the learner – not too easy that a student is bored and not too difficult that they experience frustration.

The target range that is suggested for a learner is 100L below the student measure and 50L above.

So a 500L learner finding books within their targeted range (400L to 550L) will help them practice and grow as long as they read consistently and challenge themselves.

The BOOKR Class Library consists of 1000+ animated e-books, nursery rhymes, songs, 4000+ games, and 200+ flashcards and is regularly updated with new titles.

  • Narration

  • oral language production skills through songs, nursery rhymes, motivating examples, encouraging games and flashcards
  • written language comprehension skills with demonstrative illustrations and animations, and follow-up activities

The Library is divided into 9 proficiency levels which are aligned the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Besides the requirements of the CEFR, educational and psychological aspects were also taken into consideration, especially regarding some topics and themes.

Each BOOKR Class level has a recommended age group in focus, but the books range on a wider scale and are not restricted to only that. The recommended age group for a book can be found in the details of each book in the Teacher’s Dashboard.

BOOKR Level CEFR level Terminology Description of the BOOKR Level

With the help of the books, learners can understand and use more complex language structures related to a range of topics, such as culture, society, and current events. The input exemplifies and encourages participation in conversations, expressing ideas and opinions, and giving reasons and explanations.

When selecting and composing texts, we pay special attention to creating a variety of books to cover a wide range of subjects for each level. As learners start their language learning journey at different ages, our levels offer content for various age groups . These different topics and genres showcase the diversity of the English language. This enables us to provide relevant context to vocabulary topics, chunks, different registers, and various grammar structures to develop skills as well as teach readers about culture, civilization and other diverse subject matters.

The Teacher’s Dashboard is a web-based platform designed for teachers.

On this platform you can manage your students and classes, generate unique personal access codes for them, follow their activity in the app, see how much time they spend on a book, how many titles they read and what their results are in the exercises.

You can also assign specific books for them to read – these will appear on their “My Books” shelf in the application.

You can also browse the book selection based on level, recommended age group, grammar or vocabulary content, and find supporting materials such as activity tips, offline worksheets, printable flashcards, and book previews etc.

You can create and assign reading comprehension tests and create offline, printable vocabulary tests based on selected titles. These tests are generated by AI.

Definitely! Thanks to the wide variety of content developed by English as a Foreign Language teachers, BOOKR Class is suitable as complementary material for schools.

With their student codes, your students can use the app individually on mobile phones, tablets and computers. Also, for collective learning experience you can share your screen or use a smartboard.

Reading with BOOKR Class is also great fun beyond the classic learning environment, for instance whilst travelling or on cozy Sunday afternoons.

At BOOKR Class, we believe that everyone can relate to stories, especially children. The main reason we created BOOKR Class was to offer students a familiar setting – storytelling – to improve their language skills.

Folk tales, fairy tales, classic and contemporary literature can all give a meaningful context to the target language, while also developing soft skills. They help children empathize with characters, relate to the joy of others, and feel sadness for their misfortunes. The plot of such texts are mostly linear with genres that are familiar to readers, so are easy to follow. Thanks to the context and coherence, the stories are more comprehensible.

To provide a tool for students to navigate the often bumpy road of becoming passionate readers in another language, we have combined the elements of e-books, audiobooks, traditional textbooks, educational apps and mobile games to give children the most engaging reading experience possible.

With the help of illustration, animation and narration, reading is scaffolded and narratives easily catch and hold attention. They are also immersive while creating a positive attitude to reading, enhancing their experience with language.

Whether through books, pictures, music, multimedia, or the spoken word – storytelling is a crucial part of early childhood education and beyond.

According to research conducted in 2016 (“The effect of BOOKR Kids stories”, With Art for Education Research Group, University of Szeged) involving 65 kindergarten and elementary school students, and another study in 2019 (BOOKR Kids & Klebelsberg Center, as part of the EFOP 3.2.4. grant) with students from years 2 and 6, our discreetly animated interactive books are proven to maintain long-term attention, providing higher exposure time to literary pieces. They develop students’ linguistic awareness in a multifaceted way and have a positive effect on  comprehension skills.

These interactive books also allow educators to close the achievement gap in learning abilities in the classroom and to mitigate socioeconomic and socio-cultural disadvantages. The still images and motion pictures inspire teachers to implement visual reading as a part of their lessons.

The assumption that young people are attracted to the techno-media approach of viewing was clearly confirmed by these research studies. The participants’ responses indicated an emotional attachment. The novelty of the format by itself did not explain the high enjoyment index; positive responses were primarily related to the actual use and experience of BOOKR Class.

In summary, the books of the BOOKR Class app develop students’ performance in linguistic awareness and reading comprehension through improved vocabulary, understanding meaning, formulating a basic statement, highlighting elements of narrative themes and understanding implied messages. Furthermore, they strengthen students’ digital reading comprehension. During the research periods, reading interactive books yielded better results than reading traditional printed texts in the areas listed above.

Yes, the number of books in the Library is constantly increasing with at least 20 new content on a monthly basis. We do our best to develop all levels in parallel.

When recording narrations for our stories, our purpose is to provide extra help in understanding the stories, scaffold the reading process and offer a solid base for good listening and pronunciation skills for children.

Books on Level 1 and Level 2 are read mostly by British English or American English speakers, while on the higher levels more diverse accents can be heard. Several of our books have different civilizational and cultural content from all around the world and these books have matching narration. Where possible, we include the special accent that is present in the region where the story or speaker is from, so for example a paragraph introducing a French meal is read out by a French Englihs-speaker. . This gives students the opportunity to become familiar with the natural speech of not only native speakers who use the standard accent, but also with the idiosyncrasies of different regions and nation’s English pronunciation.

While BOOKR Class is designed to strengthen English language skills, we are releasing BOOKR Schule, the German language learning version, this year, in 2024.

If you purchased through the App Store (Apple), there is information about the cancellation process here.

If you purchased through the Google Play Store (Android), there is information about the cancellation process here.

After cancellation your subscription will be terminated at the end of the current billing cycle.

Please, also note that uninstalling the BOOKR Class app will not cancel your subscription.

When a school purchases a BOOKR Class license, we create an account for your school. Your school will appoint a School admin who can add you as a teacher to the system. The School admin will register your email address and create your password so you can access the Teacher’s Dashboard online. Once logged in, add your classes and students. You will be able to return to this platform anytime with your email address and password.

To enter the application, you need your email address and password from the School admin. Students have a 6- or 10-digit student code that are either from their previous version of the app or generated automatically in the Teacher’s Dashboard. Find the student code under the student’s profile.

For more information about getting started, please read our tutorial guide here

To log in to the Teacher’s Dashboard, you need an email address and a password previously registered in your school’s account.

To log in to the BOOKR Class application, you need the same email address and password.

Students only require a 6- or 10-digit student code to log in the app. These codes can be found in the Teacher’s Dashboard, under the “Student’s profile” menu.

Your login details consist of your email address and a password that the School admin shared with you. If you can’t get hold of this password, it is best to create a new one. Go to the Teacher’s Dashboard and click on “Forgot password?”. This will send you an email with instructions for resetting your password.

After opening the app, tap on the purple button with the text “Sign In With Your Student Code”. Students can type in their 6- or 10-digit student code in the white field here then tap “Sign In”. This will log them into the Library.

A student code can be used by a student on more than one device (for example, on a tablet in school and on a phone at home), but only on one device at a time.

Go to the “Students” menu in the Teacher’s Dashboard, and click “Add New Student” in the top right corner. Fill out the student’s details, add class and license (isn’t mandatory) and then click on “Create Profile”. Then the system will automatically generate a 10-digit code for the student on their profile page.

This is the code your student needs to enter the application. This code is unique to each student.

Be careful: if you want to grant access to a student, make sure you assign a license to them. If the student doesn’t get a valid license, they will be able to enter the Library application, but will not be able to fully access the content.

Teachers and students registered in the BOOKR Class system will only have access to all the books and features if they have an “Active” license. After creating the student profile, you have to assign a license to the student. You can do this on the same page by clicking on“’Extend license”. A pop up window will offer you the available license packages. Choose one, then click “Add license”. After this point, the student will have full access to the BOOKR Class Library.

You can also go to the “Licenses” menu and assign an active license to one or multiple students at the same time.

Just log in to the Teacher’s Dashboard and choose “Student” on the left side. Use the Search option and enter the name of the student. The system will find the name and in the table you can scroll right and find the “Student code” column.

You have a chance to print student codes individually or collectively. Select your students by ticking the box next to their names, then click on “Manage Selected” and “Print student codes”. You can select a maximum of 100 students at a time. A PDF file with the students’ name, 10-digit unique codes, class and a QR code that leads to the Library application will automatically download to your device.

If you select one or multiple students and click “Manage selected” and choose the “Export Selected Student Data”’ option, you can export an .xls file containing the selected students’ student codes as well as all other information listed in the table.

No, the app will keep you signed in. When restarting your phone or updating the app you might need to log in with your email address and password (for students, their code) again.

The student code is valid for the time you or your school purchase a BOOKR Class subscription for (usually 12 months). The first day of your subscription is usually when BOOKR hands the Teacher’s Dashboard access over to the school, unless requested otherwise. The same applies to teacher login details.

To find out more, please consult your colleague responsible for BOOKR Class at your school.

First, check that the student code entered into the app is the same as the one in the Teacher’s Dashboard, and make sure it is entered correctly (no extra spaces, typos, etc.). Also, make sure their license is “Active”. If the problem persists, please contact us at support@bookrclass.com.

Every school has the opportunity to implement the SSO feature. This feature lets your students log in into our system with your system authenticating them. If you want to access this feature, please get in touch with us at support@bookrclass.com.

3. The BOOKR Class Library

Both! The BOOKR Class Library is one of the three essential elements of the BOOKR Class platform. It is where all our interactive books are located. Therefore, both teachers and students can log in, use the app, read the books and play the games.

Our selection varies from classics to contemporary titles: you’ll meet Old MacDonald, Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Prince, Tom Sawyer, Peter Rabbit, Sherlock Holmes and many more. Our collection includes dozens of books from prestigious publishers such as Moomin, White Star, Blue Apple Books, Albert Whitman and Co and Oxford University Press, as well as hundreds of in-house produced titles.

You’ll also find books on practical situations, introductions to the English-speaking world, and texts on civilization from all around the world. Every book is enhanced with animation, interaction, narration by professional voice actors and, of course, educational games related to the stories. To ensure an authentic learning experience, in these stories the narrator’s accent reflects the nationality of the author and the context of the text, giving teachers an opportunity to include the differences between Anglophone countries, patterns of speech and accents in their curriculum.

Learn more about our selection.

BOOKR Class is recommended for teachers and educators enthusiastic about digital solutions in education; and to their K-8 students between the ages of 4-14 with language proficiency levels from beginner (pre-A1*) to upper-intermediate (B2*).

From kindergarteners to teenagers, everyone can find a story to suit their level and interest.

*According to the Common European Framework of Reference

The BOOKR Class Library is recommended for K-8 students (between the age of 4-14) and is divided into six proficiency levels. Each  books is adapted to a specific age group (0-8, 6-10, 8-12, 10-14, 12-16) and based on their needs, interests and preferences as language learners. When selecting and composing the texts, different topics and different genres are included to showcase the diversity of the English language.

The BOOKR Class Library is divided into 9 proficiency levels which are adapted to the linguistic proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): from pre-A1 to B2 (pre-beginner to upper-intermediate), from BR30L to 1120L.

Yes, the number of books in the Library is constantly increasing. We do our best to develop all levels in parallel.

Our main goal is to provide entertaining, engaging classic and modern stories for each language proficiency group from beginners to intermediate students, while keeping the texts as natural as possible. Some texts that fit our levels were kept in their original form, while others have been simplified to suit one of the BOOKR Class levels. The BOOKR Class application also contains texts written by our in-house authors, tailored to focus on specific language structures to provide more examples of the particular linguistic element in authentic input.

Every story includes narration that you can choose to turn on or off. Just tap “Settings” in the top right corner of the page, then switch off or on the “Narration” toggle.

This function allows students to read the stories at their own pace, and teachers to include further tasks (e.g.: reading for information, extra comprehension checks) in the reading process.

When the narration is turned off, the word annotations show up.

BOOKR Class offers more than 1000 illustrated, animated, narrated and gamified e-books for English learners. Besides storybooks such as Robin Hood, The Little Price, Sherlock Holmes, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and so on, the Library also contains song and karaoke on lower levels, vocabulary building and pronunciation practicing flashcards that have a build in AI- based voice recognition feature, as well as activity books full of exercises.

In the Search view of the app you can easily filter your search by taping on the icons: book is for the storybooks, flash is for the flashcards and the microphone is for the songs and karaokes.

In the Library application, all assigned books are displayed under the “My Books” filter. Your students also receive a notification within the app, which they can check in the notification center, marked with a bell., The assigned books are marked with a red circle on the right top of their cover.

Under the “My Books” section, in the top right corner of the books, there is a countdown clock until the deadline you set for the students. If they pass the deadline it turns red.

The Lexile placement test is not available for all of the users.

If it is available, it can be found in the Library application’s “My Profile” view after tapping on the avatar at the top left corner. Users can take the test multiple times by simply clicking on “Test Center”’ at the right top corner. This is where the tests are listed for the students. The result of the test determines which of the 9 levels the user’s English language proficiency corresponds to.

It can be found in the Library application’s “My Profile” view after tapping on the avatar at the top left corner. Above the student’s name, there is a “Take a test” button, which opens the Test Center. If a student has a comprehension test assignment, he / she sees it under the “Tests to take” section. By clicking on the “Start test” button, it opens in a pop-up window.

Students can check their Past results at the bottom of the list, by clicking on the “Review” button next to the comprehension test.

Every story is narrated by an actor, so the speed of the narration cannot be changed. Our goal is to provide an authentic English language experience, so we don’t modify the natural way our actors speak. Needless to say, the narrators bear in mind that the app is for educational purposes, so the voiceover gets created according to the levels.

We recently introduced a new game type, which enables students to record their voice and send it to their teachers. With this features students can improve their speaking with our AI that listens and helps with pronunciation. It checks every word and lets students record their voice, giving a clear picture and holistic evaluation of their speaking skills. It is not available in every book, only in the newly uploaded ones.

Yes! It is available in the Library application, if students switch off the book’s narration, it will appear with dotted lines. The system analyzes books to pickout key words and explains them using examples from the book itself. It adjusts the simplicity or complexity of the explanations to match the book’s level.

Teachers can log in using their email address and password that was created by the school admin. If you can’t find the password, simply tap on “Forgot password?” on the login page and enter your email address used at registration. You will then receive instructions via email on how to reset your password.

Students only need their 6- or 10-digit student access code to log into the app. These codes can be found in the Teacher’s Dashboard. Go to “Students”, use the search option and enter the name of the student. The system will find the name and in the table you can scroll right to find the “Student code” column.

Parents first need to register in the library app. Your login details are the email address and password created at the time of the registration. If you can’t find these details, simply tap on “Forgot password” on the login page and enter your email address which you used at registration. You will then receive instructions via email on how to reset your password.

To learn more about the library app click here.

The user interface of the library app is currently available in English, Spanish, Indonesian, Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese. More languages are coming soon.

BOOKR Class is an English teaching and learning experience with language immersion as a core value.

Instead of using translation that might disrupt the flow of storytelling, we encourage associative learning. Similarly to how children learn their mother tongue, students can learn English through association through stories, songs, games, and other engaging activities. For each graded reader, illustrations and animations are created to support the understanding of the texts, and this way serve as scaffolding for the learners. However, annotations are included for certain words that require higher language proficiency than the level of the reading.

You can see the total playtime of the book on its Info Page after clicking on its cover. You can also find out about the number of pages of the book after you open it and click on “Pause”. Here, you can see the number of pages and scroll through them.

As a teacher, you can also see the “Word count” of a book in the Teacher’s Dashboard “Books” menu.

The educational games are included at the end of each story.

They are suitable for the relevant age range with a playful layout with encouraging feedback to motivate learners. The games include new vocabulary, grammar practice, reading comprehension, spelling as well as listening tasks and brainteasers, e.g. memory games, labeling, sudoku and even coloring activities for young children.

4. The Teacher's Dashboard

The Teacher’s Dashboard is a web-based platform designed for teachers.

On this platform you can manage all your students and classes, and thanks to the unique personal access codes for each student, you can follow their activity in the app, see how much time they spend on a book, how many titles they read and what their results are in the exercises.

You can also assign specific books for them to read – these will appear on their “‘My Books”’ shelf in the application.

You can also browse the book selection based on level, recommended age group, grammar or vocabulary content, and find supporting materials such as activity tips, offline worksheets, printable flashcards, and book previews etc.

Besides assigning books, you can create comprehension tests with BOOKR’s AI tool. This tool generates quizzes from selected books, offering up to 20 questions with answers. You can pick books to make a test, assign it to students, and see scores as a progress bar.

With AI, you can also generate printable vocabulary tests, based on the selected books. Create a custom word list and adjust it to fit your lesson perfectly.
